Nothing Compares to Dining Out in New Orleans

OK, did I miss something? Since when did it become standard operating procedure for restaurants (at least where I live) to hi-jack customers with outrageous prices while providing average food and mediocre service?

I went to have a beer with a buddy the other day at a chain restaurant that shall remain unnamed. We were despo and thought we’d try something new. I arrived first so I did the decent thing and ordered myself a beer without waiting for my friend. The bartender poured a tall glass of my favorite pilsner, I thanked her, took a sip of the sweet, cold nectar … then I choked and almost spewed beer all over the counter in shock. You see, the bartender had just slapped down my $8.10 tab and I was reeling. $8.10 for a pint of beer? Are you kidding me? I’d understand if I was in a pinch at the airport in say, Monaco, but this was the unnamed chain restaurant in my podunk little town. Let me repeat. The unnamed restaurant … in my podunk little town.

Since when did this become OK? Outraged, my pal and I ditched the place and headed down the road to a much nicer (cheaper) establishment. Pint of beer: $4.50. Much more reasonable, but I can remember getting a pint of beer at my local dive bar in California for $2.00! Forget that chain restaurant and their overpriced food and beer. Just another run-of-the-mill restaurant chain getting over on…
